How to Keep Your Bleached Hair Healthy



I've been platinum blonde once in my life (oh beauty school), and while it definitely took a toll on my hair, it was actually in pretty good condition after all the bleaching it went through. Bleach is one of the most damaging things you can do to your hair – it literally strips color out of your hair and takes other things that make your hair strong and healthy along with it. There are ways you can keep your hair from becoming straw-like and actually looking and feeling quite healthy though. Below are ways to have healthy bleached hair, whether you’re completely platinum or just have a few highlights:
  1. Go to a professional. I cannot stress this enough. A professional knows exactly what is best for your hair and will give you the lightest blonde you'd like without compromising the condition of your hair. If you hear of someone with the reputation of being great with blondes, then go to them! Here are some other tips for finding a good hairstylist.
  2. Don't wash your hair everyday. If your hair is bleached, it's stripped of some of its natural oils, and you don't want to over wash it because it will dry it out even more. Go as long as you can without washing it and when you do wash it, be sure to wash it correctly. Here is a post on how to wash your hair.
  3. Skip conditioner and go straight to the intensive hair masks. Conditioner is for normal hair, your hair isn't normal anymore, you need masks now. Use a deep conditioning mask that describes itself with words that are similar to "moisture" and "strength" and use it every time you wash your hair. Leave it in for at least 10 minutes every time, the steam of the shower is great for opening up your hair’s cuticle so the mask really gets deep inside each strand.
  4. Be gentle with it. Don't brush it too hard, and if it gets tangled, use a detangler before brushing it. An easy way to detangle hair is to dry it with a blow dryer and your hands first and then put the brush through it. Dry your roots first and work your way to your ends. Then brush out your ends and work your way to your roots.
  5. Avoid heat. Avoid flat irons ::shivers::, curling irons, crimpers and any other hot tools. If you want to curl your hair, try doing it with rag curls. Straighten it with a Mason Pearson, crimp it by wrapping it around a hair pin. I know nobody crimps their hair anymore but still, you get the picture, avoid hot tools. If you absolutely need to use an iron of some sort, make sure to condition your hair well and apply products before doing so to protect your hair from the heat.
  6. Oils. Argan oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil – soak your ends with lightweight oils, especially overnight.
  7. Avoid hard water. If you're a die-hard blonde and live in a city with hard water (i.e. Paris) try investing in a shower head water softener. It can make a big difference in preventing hair breakage.

Agree with all of these tips! Especially the argan oil one, you have to get a good brand though, no silicones. I use Pro Naturals argan oil leave in, nice product :)
