Undercut

The idea behind an undercut is to eliminate the weight completely from a certain section of hair. It can be drastic by shaving part of your hair or more subtle by using a razor, scissors, or thinning shears to make a section of hair dramatically lighter so it's practically non-existent. Usually the rest of your hair will lay over the section and cover it while having more movement because the hair that usually supports it is gone.

An undercut is definitely synonymous with 90's grunge and the best part of it is that it can be a secret from the world or out for everyone to see. Although searching"undercut" can result in endless photos of acne ridden teenagers and shaved sides, Grimes' undercut pictured above is the perfect definition of it for me.

yes, i had undercut like this one (above the ears too) about 10 years ago. it wasn't to eliminate weight of hair, but to be visible. i had it for about 3 years. it was very popular in europe at that time in industrial synth subcultures and all of my friends had it, both guys and girls. i cut it and shaved it with a razor. haha. those were the days. now my hair is all grown out to my waist. but it is definitely one of my favorite haircuts!

Love the pairing of the haircut with fancy clothes, instead of the typical oversized flannel shirt. I was never a huge fan of this hair, but I am kind of loving it here!

I never thought anyone could convince me that this look would be cool and chic, but I'm actually finding myself wanting it. Now that my hair is finally long, I am dealing with the reality of carrying this thick heavy mop around on my head all day; it would be a relief to have some of it shorn off while keeping the length!

I remember when this was super popular at my jr. high and high school -- during the early 90's. I always kinda wanted to do it, but never had the guts. :)
